How to calculate mulch in cubic yards
Measure bed length × width for square feet (or break irregular beds into rectangles and add them up). Then use: cubic yards = square feet × depth in inches ÷ 324. That 324 constant converts cubic inches of coverage into cubic yards.
Example: a 200 sq ft bed at 3 inches needs 200 × 3 ÷ 324 ≈ 1.85 cubic yards — order about 2 yards so you are not short after settling. At 2 inches the same bed needs ≈ 1.2 cubic yards.
Always measure the planting beds you will actually mulch, not the whole yard footprint. Paths, lawn, and hardscape should stay out of the square-footage total.
